Bose are the Apple of the sound industry. Apple and Bose cost so much because of the brand and the reputation. Yes you can get very good cheap sound systems from radio shack and build them, same way you build a PC, however to own a Mac they are outrageously expensive. It’s because they were first, same Bose were in developing such good audio systems.
Plus I do believe Bose have produced the best sounding in-ear headphones I ever known, that are better and more comfortable than your non-in-ears headphones.

Just because you’re the first doesn’t mean you’ll stay that way.
R&D for one company usually benefits the entire industry. If a factory is tooled to do something new, that factory may allow another company to produce items using the same process.
Likewise with prices, if these big companies make a new technology, and drive component cost down Then the entire industry benefits from the low costs due to scale.
As with anything in technology, if you want latest and greatest you should probably go with the high end companies. But years down the line, expect non-premium brands to manufacture the same product, cheaper and of better quality,
